AGRA
A city of monuments, Agra is the only place in India to have three UNESCO World Heritage Monuments - Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and, of course, the Taj Mahal which makes it the country's most sought after tourist destination. Easy accessibility with New Delhi and Jaipur also contribute to its popularity.
Taj Mahal:
This is the most beautiful incredible marble wonder building in the world, One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World built by 20,100 workers for 22 years from 1630-1652 AD to construct this .
Agra Fort:
Built between 1565-1573 by the greatest of the Mughal emperors, Akbar, the fort is located on the bend of the Yamuna river, almost in the center of the city
Fatehpur Sikri:
36 km west of Agra, in a perfect state of preservation, lies an emperor's dream of an ideal city.
Sikandra:
Completed in 1613, the monument is a rare combination of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. The four storied building, approximately 31 meters high, has the first three floors in red sandstone, and the fourth entirely in marble.
Itmad-ud-Daulah:
Across the Yamuna is this tomb built by Empress Noor Jahan, between 1622 and 1628, in memory of her father. A forerunner to the Taj Mahal, it is a square marble building with four corner towers and a canopy-shaped roof. Itimad-ud-Daulah was not only the first Mughal structure to be built entirely from marble, but also the first one to make extensive use of pietre dure marble inlay work
Other things to see include the Palace of Jodhabai (Akbar's Hindu wife), the ornate house of Birbal (the legendary quick-witted courtier), and the Jami Masjid.
Khajuraho
Constructed by the Chandela kings before a millennium, one of UNESCO's World Heritage List, Khajuraho's temples are an astounding spectacle of sensuality and frozen ecstasy. The erotic art clearly reflects the then society's acceptance of sex as a source of gratification of earthly desires, and as a step towards attaining ultimate liberation or moksha.
Discovered in the jungles by a British army engineer in 1838, the temples lie in an unusual and off-beat location which witnesses climatic extremes. It was this very difficult location that saved these temples from the ravages of Islamic rulers. Originally 80 temples were built out of which only 22 survive.
Jaipur
The Pink City, as Jaipur is popularly known, was NOT always pink. Its main thoroughfares and buildings were painted earthy pink in honor of the visiting Prince of Wales in 1876. However, this amazingly symmetrical and thoroughly proportioned city came into existence as early as 1727. It was then, perhaps, the only city in India which was conceptualized and conceived on such a grand scale.
