Hydro carbon sector to create 15000 Job opportunities in next few years
Domestic petroleum is likely to grapple with maximum attrition rate in 2008, which as per estimates made by The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) could hover around 35%.
The attrition rate would result into manpower crunch for state-owned corporations, particularly Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corpn., Indian Oil Corpn., Oil India, Bharat Petroleum, National Thermal Power Corpn., Power Trading Corpn.
The domestic hydro carbon discovery and its refining sector would witness large capacity additions from 2008 onwards in view of growing shortages of crude oil. The target for the capacity expansion in the refining sector would take off from 149 million tones to 235 million tones in next couple of years which will require recruitment of petroleum engineers, drillers, physicians, geologists, geo-physicists besides executives.
The sector alone is expected to create job opportunities for nearly 10-15,000 workforce, majority of whom would be for middle management cadre and power ranks. The domestic gas sector would also need workforce as both public sector oil companies and their counterparts in the private sector have been trying to discover hydro carbons as per stipulations of new exploration and licensing policies.
The capacity extension of not only Jamnagar refinery is taking place but public sector undertakings are proposing to come out with new refineries particularly at places such as Orissa, Bhatinda and Sultanpur. These new ventures would naturally require workforce and that is why the ASSOCHAM has forecast that the Indian energy sector would create abundant job opportunities. This sector would witness attrition rates in a manner just as the services, realty, hospitality, civil aviation etc. have been coping with the attrition rate in the recent times, as per ASSOCHAM assessment.
