Airports
India need 1200 aircrafts by 2020.
It is estimated that by 2010, India's fleet strength will stand at 575 compared to the estimated fleet strength of 375 as on end 2007. India is in third place in the Top 10 list of countries with the highest number of additional flights added in the recent months in this year, behind only China and the US
Since the economy is expected to grow at 8 to 9% rate for the next five years there will be corresponding growth of domestic and international passengers and cargo traffic. The lack of airport infrastructure could become the biggest hurdle constraining the growth of the industry. Considering this ,the Ministry of Civil Aviation has taken a significant step by placing airport infrastructure at the top of its agenda. As per the various Aircraft Industry estimates India’s demand for aircrafts will be around 1200 numbers ,worth US$115 by 2020. According to Civil Aviation Ministey sources the country will need 1,500 to 2,000 passenger planes in 10 years, up from 375 by end 2007. Civil aviation is one sector that will attract huge investments in the next five years.
The government, along with private participation, is investing heavily in airport infrastructure. Airports at Delhi and Mumbai are being restructured through the private-public partnership route. Two new greenfield airports are under construction at Bangalore and Hyderabad. Proposals for several other greenfield airports are under consideration. The government has already permitted 100% FDI through the automatic route in greenfield airport projects.
